Background and objectives of activities
This program includes step-by-step remote island medical education centering on practical training at remote medical sites, education for graduate students involved in epidemiological research using the Amami islands as a field, and the JICA "Remote Island Medical Care" training course for physicians involved in remote island medical care in Asia and the Pacific Rim. Furthermore, under the "Support for Education of Doctors who aspire to Remote Island Hekiji Medical Care" (MEXT), a medical personnel education support program from 2005 to 2007, the Remote Island Hekiji Medical Care Education Support Office was established.
Summary of Activities
In 2007, remote island medical practice began as a required course for all sixth-year medical students. Based on its past achievements, the Center for Remote Islands and Remote Regions Medical Training has developed educational programs and conducted practical training and training for medical students and graduate students from all over Japan, as well as physicians who wish to engage in remote island medicine, in cooperation with the centers for the development of local medical personnel. The Remote Island and Remote Area Medical Education Support Office, in collaboration with the Department of International Island Medical Science, supports student education related to remote island medicine and has developed an IT system that provides the affiliated hospital with professional support for medical treatment at remote island medical sites.

The program provides students with advanced knowledge and skills related to remote island medical care and a wide range of support methods, and develops education to enhance the quality and quantity of human resources involved in community medical care.
