Background and objectives of activities
In order to prevent further deterioration of the marine litter problem, it is important to quickly collect spillage from land areas before it moves offshore or degrades to microplastics, i.e. while it is still in the coastal zone immediately after spillage. The cooperation of local fishermen, who are familiar with the current environment and the geometry of the seabed, is essential for the collection of litter in the coastal zone. This study aims to elucidate the current status of litter collection by coastal fishermen.
Summary of Activities
In order to determine which kind, when, and how much marine debris is collected by coastal fisheries, we are conducting a survey along the coasts of Satsuma Peninsula and Osumi Peninsula to understand the actual situation. The results will be used to quantitatively clarify the distribution of marine debris accumulation in coastal areas.
Expected Benefits
This research is being conducted in close cooperation with fishermen in Kagoshima Prefecture. By publicizing the results of this research, we hope to build a social system in which coastal fishermen can actively participate in the collection of marine debris and contribute to the conservation of the marine environment, and to propose measures to prevent marine pollution in order to solve the problem of marine debris.
