Development of Sakurajima Volcano version of evacuation shelter management game (HUG) as educational material for improving disaster prevention literacy regarding volcanic disasters

Background and objectives of activities
Since 2016, the Research and Education Center for Natural Hazards has established a working group to study what would happen if Sakurajima were to erupt now on the scale of a Taisho eruption. By studying the impact on people's lives and livelihoods, the group developed a Sakurajima version of HUG (an acronym for hinanzyo unei game, an evacuation center management game) as a disaster prevention education tool for Sakurajima volcanic disasters. The goal of the game is to help local residents understand the need for self-help and mutual aid in disasters, and to take action to acquire disaster self-help skills, thereby strengthening local disaster prevention and mitigation measures.
Summary of Activities
Working group members from various professions, including local government officials and hospital personnel, studied and developed the settings and examples in the game. Through the experience of the developed game, local governments and related professions involved in disasters can learn about knowledge and responses in the event of a volcanic disaster. Ultimately, the project aims to improve the self-help capabilities of local residents through disaster prevention education on volcanic disasters.
Expected Benefits
This activity and project will lead to self-help actions by local residents, cooperation with others, and concrete actions by spreading knowledge about disaster prevention and mitigation in the event of climate change or volcanic eruption, and will also contribute to building a city where residents can continue to live with peace of mind. It will also lead to the provision of disaster prevention education opportunities for all people.
