Background and objectives of activities
The Music Department of the School Education Teacher Training Program, Faculty of Education, Kagoshima University, has been providing “Music Appreciation Performances by Kagoshima University Music Department” for the Art Appreciation Class (Music) at the affiliated special needs school upon their request. Initially, this was conducted as part of the Music Education Methodology lecture or by volunteers. In the 2022 academic year, it will be held as part of the Music Education II lecture.
Summary of Activities
This program aims to provide students from the high school division of the affiliated special needs school with the experience of attending a concert with tickets in hand. The students visit the Faculty of Education's Music and Art Building to enjoy the performance. The program features diverse ensembles and choral pieces ranging from classical to popular music. It also includes joint choral performances with the students, creating an opportunity for interaction between special needs school students and university students through music.
Expected Benefits
For students at the affiliated special needs school, experiencing live performances is expected to heighten their interest in music while allowing them to appreciate its beauty and diversity. For music students, providing these concerts offers the opportunity to gain insight into special needs education and deepen their understanding. Witnessing the students' reactions to the music up close is also expected to enhance their comprehension of the unique characteristics of special needs education.
