Background and objectives of activities
Kagoshima Prefecture is ranked first in Japan in terms of eel cultivation production, but relies on naturally caught Shirasu eels for seedlings for aquaculture. However, the amount of glass eel caught has decreased to 1/10 of what it was 50 years ago, and the continuation of aquaculture itself is in jeopardy. The purpose of this activity is to contribute to the proliferation of eel resources by clarifying optimal conditions through surveys of habitat conditions in rivers and improving habitat conditions through artificial manipulation.
Summary of Activities
A survey contributing to the habitat situation after the release of eels (croaker) in river areas and the effect of the release, a survey on the habitat situation of organisms in rivers released in Kagoshima Prefecture, and comprehensive work on issues related to eels, such as issues at the sites of whitebait harvesting and eel farming.
Expected Benefits
This activity is expected to contribute to the preservation of the natural resources of the water body and to the maintenance of the production of food resources.
