Background and objectives of activities

In the coastal areas of the Pacific Ocean countries, residents are engaged in fishing for their livelihood. In recent years, however, resource levels have been declining in some areas, and the management of resource use and the maintenance of the livelihoods of local residents has become an issue. The purpose of this study is to empirically clarify the institutional and management structure for ensuring the sustainability of resource use and the livelihoods of local residents.

Summary of Activities

This study analyzes the institutions necessary for the sustainable utilization of fishery resources and the establishment of livelihoods of residents in several fishing villages in the Republic of Fiji, focusing on the actual utilization of resources such as Kaikoso (shellfish) and sea cucumbers, analysis of each household's income structure, and the possibility of alternative sources of income. In addition, the report analyzes the effectiveness and challenges of each country's resource management systems, together with students from Pacific island countries (Fiji, Solomon Islands, Kiribati) and other countries.

Expected Benefits

Contribute to maintaining the sustainable use of the marine resources of Pacific island countries and the livelihoods of their coastal populations.
