Background and objectives of activities

"Education" as discussed in the context of SD and SDGs tends to be trivialized as an awareness-raising activity. On the other hand, "education for sustainable development" proposed in the 1990s calls for a critical reexamination, reorientation, and restructuring of existing education. Therefore, as a specialized subject, students will study the relationship between education and issues of sustainability in community development, as well as the changing relationship between people and the natural environment and its effects and factors. We provide educational opportunities with the aim of developing the ability to think through the issues as a change agent in society."

Summary of Activities

The specialized course "Sustainable Regional Development and Its Education" examines the two perspectives of "sustainability" and "education". Students deepen their understanding of the future direction of community development and the inherent value in education. In the specialized subject "Environmental Education Theory," conventional environmental education theory is critically examined, and environmental issues are reappraised from a pedagogical perspective. The significance of the environment in human development is examined from the perspective of life. It examines how environmental changes have affected human development and delves into the meaning of the breakdown and reconnection of the relationship between people and nature, and between people and each other.

Expected Benefits

Participants will confront issues such as the realization of sustainable cities, sustainable consumption and production, global warming, and ecosystem protection and restoration through specialized courses. We expect to develop people who have the mindset to think about and reconfigure the economy in a way that does not exclude people.
