Background and objectives of activities

The 1914 Sakurajima Taisho eruption caused a great earthquake. Half of the deaths from the entire eruption were caused by this earthquake. Earthquakes and tsunamis associated with eruptions are not limited to Sakurajima. Therefore, it is important to consider earthquakes and tsunamis in disaster prevention for volcanic eruptions in other regions.

活動の背景・目的
Left: Distribution of seismic intensity in Kagoshima City during the 1914 Sakurajima earthquake. Right: Tsunami during the 1914 Sakurajima earthquake.

Summary of Activities

The distribution of seismic intensity in Kagoshima City has been studied for earthquakes associated with the 1914 Sakurajima Taisho eruption. Research on tsunamis is currently underway. In the future, we will study the prediction of shaking and tsunamis from future earthquakes.

Expected Benefits

Contribute to disaster preparedness around volcanoes and maintain a sustainable city
