Background and objectives of activities


In 2020, Kagoshima Prefecture participated in the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare's Epilepsy Collaborative Development Project, and our hospital was designated as a base hospital for the prefecture. Kagoshima Prefecture has many inhabited islands, and about 10% of the prefecture's population lives on these islands. However, most of the epileptic patients living on these islands have few opportunities to receive treatment from epilepsy specialists or neurologists, and improving epilepsy care in the Amami Islands is an urgent issue.

Summary of Activities

●Improving epilepsy treatment
Since 2018, an epilepsy outpatient clinic has been established at the prefectural Oshima Hospital once a month to provide consultations for patients who are having difficulty with diagnosis and treatment. Since then, examinations and surgery for intractable cases have been regularly carried out at Kagoshima University Hospital.
●Epilepsy awareness-raising project
Since 2017, we have been holding study groups with the aim of raising awareness of epilepsy treatment in the Oshima area. These have been suspended due to the new coronavirus infection, but we are planning to resume them. We also regularly hold epilepsy awareness-raising lectures via the web.
●Promotion of epilepsy medical care collaboration
We aim to collaborate with local medical institutions, using the prefectural Oshima Hospital as a regional base, and also to build a web-based medical care system that is easier to access.
●Epilepsy medical care survey
We will conduct a survey on the current situation and issues related to epilepsy diagnosis and treatment in collaboration with the Kagoshima Prefecture Epilepsy Medical Care Collaboration Council, the Kagoshima Prefecture Medical Association, etc.
