Background and objectives of activities
In order to appropriately manage the AMAMI Islands, which were inscribed on the World Natural Heritage List for their high biodiversity, a great deal of research is needed on the organisms and habitats. In addition, since there is not enough awareness of the biodiversity, educational activities to disseminate knowledge are needed.
Summary of Activities
Developing an international education and research center in the Amami Islands to promote research on the World Natural Heritage Area. The Center has set up a continuous research area and conducts surveys of changes in forests and other ecosystems, distribution of plants and animals, and habitats. From the results of these surveys, lectures, outdoor biological observation meetings, and symposiums are held for local residents.
Expected Benefits
Gaining basic data for creating measures to properly manage and conserve biodiversity in the remote islands of the Amami Archipelago. The project will help to improve the level of education on the remote islands, and will enable all to conserve biodiversity.
